Oil Consumption, Measure - 6VD1-W
General
Oil consumption of an internal combustion engine means amount of oil which is used as a consequence of combustion. Oil consumption should under no circumstances be confused with oil loss caused by leaks from oil pan, cylinder head cover, etc.
Task of engine oil is to:
1. Separate surfaces that slide on one another with an oil film, i.e. prevent dry friction.
2. Carry away heat produced by friction.
3. Carry away combustion residues.
These tasks require consumption of a certain amount of oil. The oil consumption is, however, influenced by external operating factors, driving style, production tolerances. Under normal circumstances, consumption is so minimal that no oil or only a small amount needs to be added between prescribed oil change intervals. Topping up is absolutely necessary, however, when oil level is below "MIN" mark of dipstick. Likewise, ensure that oil level does not exceed upper "MAX" mark of dipstick, which would lead to increased oil consumption.
Since oil consumption is technically necessary, it can be concluded that an engine which does not use any oil at all has encountered oil dilution caused by particular operating conditions. Frequent cold starts, driving when over-cold, etc. result in oil flowing back to oil pan containing fuel particles, condensation, thus becoming "diluted", this can lead to incorrect supposition that an engine is not consuming any oil at all.
Oil diluted in this fashion lacks lubricating power, which may lead to engine damage if prescribed oil change intervals are not observed. Main causes for oil dilution are driving in mainly urban traffic, also frequent driving at too low engine speeds when engine is cold.
Oil consumption only begins to stabilise after driving several thousand kilometres; therefore, measurements of oil consumption are only accurate after about 7 500 km / 4 000 miles. Before measuring oil consumption, ensure that an engine is not losing oil due to a leak.
Note:
Oil dipstick can only be used for checking, not for measurement. Engine must always be switched off for at least 2 minutes before oil level can be checked. If, after an oil change, maximum engine oil fill does not match maximum level mark of dipstick, this is due to necessary production tolerances.
All information regarding permissible engine oil consumption, filling quantities are included in Driver's Manual.
Measuring Method
1. Check is done with vehicle on a level surface, with engine up to operating temperature (min. engine oil temperature: 80° C).
2. Allow engine to run at idle speed immediately before draining the engine oil.
3. Immediately after switching engine off, drain engine oil, then record time with a stop watch, drain time: 3 minutes (tests have shown that drain procedure is to be limited to 3 minutes).
4. Always allow engine oil to drain until stream of oil turns into drops.
5. Allow drained engine oil to cool down to approx. 20° C (1 to 2 hours).
6. Amount of cooled engine oil is measured in a measuring cylinder, then topped up with fresh oil to maximum engine oil fill quantity, minus 0.7 litres for oil filter which has not been changed.
7. Using this amount of engine oil, customer should travel at least 500 km / 350 miles without adding engine oil. (The driver should keep to their normal routes, driving style).
8. After this, preceding procedure (points 1 to 4) is repeated using exactly same engine oil running time.
9. Amount of engine oil "missing" from measuring cylinder is engine oil consumption / distance covered.
