in iulie anul trecut am vazut in vama bechet, pe sensul de intrare in tara, un VW Touareg TDI cu inscriptia 12W. l-am intrebat pe proprietar ce semnifica si mi-a zis ca masina e unicat in tara si ca are 390 CP. acum ce nu inteleg: stiu ca VW are pe passat, de exemplu, un motor in 6 cilindri in V. ce ar trebui sa cred despre inscriptia 12 W ??? aud pareri?

The W engine is an engine configuration in which the cylinder banks resemble the letter W in the same way a V engine resembles the letter V. There have been three entirely different implementations of this concept: one with three banks of cylinders, one with four banks, and one with two banks of cylinders and two crankshafts.
The Volkswagen Group (VAG) created the first successful automotive W engine with the introduction of their W12. It combined two narrow-angle VR6 engines around a single crankshaft for a total of four banks of cylinders. For this reason, the four-bank configuration is sometimes, and more accurately, referred to as a "VV" ("vee-vee" or "double-vee") to distinguish it from the traditional three-bank "W" design.
The W-12 is used in the Volkswagen Phaeton, the Audi A8 and the Bentley Continental GT - though in the latter application, the engine has been highly modified by Bentley and fitted with twin KKK turbochargers. As a result, it produces considerably more power than the original version. The narrow (15°) angle between bank pairs makes this resemble a V12 engine, in that it has just two cylinder heads and two sets of camshafts.
VAG went on to produce a W16 engine prototype which produced 623 horsepower (465 kW) for the Bentley Hunaudières concept car. A quad-turbocharged version of this engine went into production in 2005 powering the 1001hp Bugatti Veyron 16.4. A W8 engine was also produced for use in the VW Passat.
The major advantage of these engines is packaging, that is, they contain high numbers of cylinders but are relatively compact.

A8`ul ala din Piata Dorobanti l`am vazut si eu. Era chiar de vanzare pana de curand. Exista V12 TDI, are 500 CP; acest motor se poate pune si pe Audi Q7. La benzina, e W12. S`a ales configuratia in W pt. ca ocupa mai putin loc in compartimentul motor si are o functionare mult mai silentioasa.
La Veyron, unghiul V`urilor mici e de 15 grade, iar cel al V`ului mare e de 90 de grade. Baietii au tb. sa inventeze nush ce fel de sistem care supraveghezeaza daca toate pistoanele functioneaza normal pt. ca la un un nr. asa de mare de cilindrii, nefunctionarea unuia dintre ele nu s`ar putea face observata.
Pe Passat, cel mai mare motor a fost un W8, pare`mi`se ca de 4.2 l si vreo 300 CP care era cuplat la tractiunea integrala 4Motion.
Cam aceleasi motoare le are si Phaeton`ul. V10 TDI avea 333 CP; eu as alege un V8 4.2 TDI 326 CP; e mult mai rafinat si mai "economic", in plus cantareste si mult mai putin.

Veyron are W16, 1001 CP si 1250 Nm deci se poate si mai mult.
